Former Edo State Governor, John Odigie Oyegun, has been elected the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress as earlier reported by newswirengr.

The 75-years-old Oyegun, was the governor of Edo State during the ill-fated Third Republic in 1993, before maximum ruler, Sani Abacha, scuttled the budding journey to democratic rule on November 17, 1993.

His election as the APC chairman at the maiden National Convention of the party at Eagle Square, Abuja, in the early hours of Saturday marks a new beginning for the progressive party ahead of 2015 general elections.

The former Bayelsa State Governor Timipre Sylva also in the race for the office of the National Chairman of the party last night stepped down for Oyegun who is the favorite of Bola Tinubu according to party sources.

Tom Ikimi, also a contender from Edo state did not openly step down as expected but party sources insisted that he was never going to be trusted for the job.
