Opinion: 2015 Elections, The Unexpected Will Happen

“My advice to you is this: go to God and present your case to Him. For he does great works too marvelous to understand. He performs miracles without number. He gives rain for the earth. He sends water for the fields. He gives prosperity to the poor and humble, and he takes sufferers to safety. He frustrates the plans of the crafty, so their efforts will not succeed. He catches those who think they are wise in their own cleverness, so that their cunning schemes are thwarted. They grope in the daylight as though they were blind; they see no better in the day time than at night. He receives the poor from the cutting words of the strong. He saves them from the clutches of the powerful. And so at last the poor have hope, and the fangs of the wicked are broken”. (Job 5:8-6, NLB).

2015 elections, the unexpected will happen. This is not a prophetic treatise. “I am not one of your professional prophets. I certainly never trained to be one” but a priest of the most High God who “hears this word” (Amos 7:14-15), “read this word” (Rev. 1:3) and under mandate from God to “proclaim and publish his word” (Ps. 68:11). Certainly, the expectations of many politicians, office holders and office seekers shall fail them, if they continually refuse listening to God and ordered their lives in keeping to God’s plan and agenda for the year 2015. In this treatise, I write as to politicians, office seekers, and political parties that shall fail elections and those who shall win election in 2015. Who are those that will fail election inspite of their scheming, plans and what have you? Who are those that shall win elections inspite of their insignificant position (social standing), where they come from, lack of resources and outstanding credentials or political clout?

Those who shall fail election in 2015: “Let everyone in the world fear the lord and let everyone stand in awe of him. For when he spoke, the world began. It appeared at his command. The Lord shatters the plans of the nations and thwarts all their schemes. But the Lord’s plan stands firm forever, his intentions can never be shaken. What joy for the nation whose God is the Lord, whose people he has chosen for his own. The Lord looks down from heaven and sees the whole human race. From his throne he observes all who live on the earth. He made their hearts so he understands everything they do. The best-equipped army cannot save a king, nor is great strength. Don’t count on your war horse to give you victory for all its strength, it cannot save you. But the Lord’s watches over those who fear Him, those who rely on his unfailing love. He rescues them from death and keep them alive in times of famine” (Ps. 33:8-19 , NLB).

These are they that shall fail election in 2015. Those who have no fear of God and trust in their abilities and resources (money, parties’ structure, ethnic group) shall fail election. Their schemes, plans and crafty devices God shall foil and scatter. These are those who oppress the poor, enslave them by driving them instead of empowering them economically through skill acquisitions or social amenities. These are those who use thugs, armed youths with dangerous weapons and threaten the life of perceived political opponents. These are cunning schemers, the crafty who loot the treasury of the people and uses the money to buy votes, bribe delegates to vote for them for election, bribe fellow contestants to step down and blackmail others using state apparatus and manipulations to keep themselves in power, surely, God will frustrate their plans and restore dignity and honour to our electoral process.

These are those who have raised ethnic militias, and seek help from diviners, witch doctors, juju men, and covenanted with juju secret cults. These are those who are seeking help from other sources other than God to win elections. The Lord says, “Destruction is certain for my rebellious children” says the Lord. You make plans that are contrary to my will you weave web of plans that are not from my spirit, thus pining up your sins. For without consulting me you have gone to Egypt (others) to find help. You have put your trust in Pharaoh you will be humiliated and disgraced. For though his power extends to Zoan and Hanes, it will all turn out to your shame. He will not help you even one little bit” (Isaiah 30:1-5, NLB). For it is God who enthrones and sustain thrones. The word says: “For no one on earth – from east or west, or even from wilderness- can raise another person up. It is God alone who judges; he decides who will rise and who will fall” (Ps 75:6-7). Daniel praised the God of heaven saying, “praise the name of God forever and ever, for he alone has all wisdom and power. He determines the course of world events; he removes kings and sets others on the throne. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the scholars. He reveals deep and mysterious things and knows what lies hidden in darkness…” (Dan 2:20-22, NLB).

God will surely dethrone and enthrone some in 2015 elections. Some holding elective offices now have failed God. They have disappointed those who elected them into power. They have impoverished the electorates through many unfilled promises. Some have killed and shed blood in course of governance and effort to retain their seat in government. As no throne or office is sustained by violence and bitterness so also no one that gets into office by violence and bitterness ever succeeds. Thrones or offices are sustained by righteousness.. “A just king gives stability to his nation … only a stupid prince will oppress his people, but a king will have a long reign if he hates dishonesty and bribery … those who plant seeds of injustice will harvest disaster, and their reign of terror will end” (Prov. 22:8, 28:16, 29:4, NLB). Those seeking political office through intimidation, blackmail, violence and manipulation shall fail elections. God will frustrate their plans. “we can make our plans, but the Lord determines our steps… violence people deceive their companions, leading them down a harmful path” (Prov. 16:9, 29, NLB). “Get all the advice and instruction you can, and be wise the rest of your life. You can make plans, but the Lord’s purpose will prevail” (Prov. 20-21, NLB). God catches those who think they are wise in their cunning schemes are thwarted.

Those who shall win election. These are those who has the fear of the Lord. Those who recognize that it is God who enthrones and dethrones. Those who abhor evil. They are godly politicians who seek the help of God to be elected into political office. They are those who give democracy dividends in empowering the electorates through skill acquisition and provision of social amenities. These people shall be re-elected. These are those who eschew violence, thuggery, blackmail and killing of political opponents. These people may not possess political clout, resources and viable structure that can make the desire impact during electoral process. They may not be from big ethnic group or fall within the zone that their parties arranged. God will save them from the clutches of the powerful and elevate them to higher heights. These are those who keep God’s commands. They put their trust in God who determines the outcomes of elections. They believe God does miracle that over turns the schemes and crafty plans of those who manipulate electoral body (INEC, SEIC) officers and the electorates. They do not bribe electorates or delegates to win elections. They do not consider elections as do or dies affair. They are dedicated to the cause of Christ and righteousness in whatever they do in realizing their political ambition.

These are those who demonstrate the supremacy of the wisdom of God in political leadership. They believe that it is God’s turn to produce a leader. For a people and for a purpose. It is what the nation or state or the people will become that matters and not what an ethnic son will become. A leader sourced by ethnic consideration will surely champion an ethnic agenda. These are those who realize that God is the governor of the nation and therefore put their trust in God and offers to be servant leaders. Not those seeking to boss and acquire wealth and show up the position they occupy. Godly politicians and political party has God as their God and are committed to serve him. Who can pretend to have vision for man that has no vision for God? These are politicians that are truly Christian not those who use the name of God, church and Christianity for elections. They are those who have record of performance, they have been involved in meeting the needs of the poor ad help to spread the gospel of Christ to the unreached. These are those who are not proud in heart. They are humble and accessible to all. They don’t use people and dump them after achieving their goal. These are those committed to Christ, convince about who God is and his ability to help even in elections, competent to serve and dispense the grace of God to suffering humanity. They are those who possess character. The character of Jesus Christ.

Yes, the unexpected will happen. Those who will win do not depend on the arm of flesh, connection, and political structure. Biblical leadership takes place when divinely appointed men and women respond in obedience to God’s call. They recognize the importance of preparation time, allowing the Holy Spirit to develop tenderness of heart and skill of hands. They carry out their leadership roles with deep conviction of God’s will and an acute awareness of the contemporary issues them and their followers’ face. Above all, they exercise leadership as servants and steward, sharing authority with their followers and affirming that leadership is primarily ministry to others, modeling for others, and mutual membership with others in Christ’s body and society. God is annoyed with Christians and the Church that has turn to be promoters of politicians and office seekers than Christ. All hope is not lost. All politicians who turn in repentance and seek God to help them realize their political ambition in godly ways shall be elected and re-elected. May God give us politicians after God’s own heart, establish them, and have them elected in 2015. These will not fail. You are blessed for life.
