Hospital Sources Say Maiduguri Blast, Death Toll Now 43

Hospital sources in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital yesterday disclosed to journalists that the Tuesday bomb blast had killed 43 persons.

A hospital staff at the State Specialist Hospital in Maiduguri, who did not want to be quoted, said “we received 43 corpses in our hospital which is the closest to the spot of the blast yesterday. But on the injured persons, about 40 of them were brought here and others taken to the Nursing Home”.

Another source, a female nurse, said the injured persons and corpses brought into the Specialist Hospital yesterday were unprecedented as children, women and young men were seriously battered, with some burnt beyond recognition.

A source who counted the corpse said, “So far, the number has been reduced in the morgues because families who were able to identify the corpses of their relatives have been coming to take them for burial. Others that are burnt beyond recognition or badly battered by the bomb are still there in the mortuary”.

Army Spokesman of the 7 Division, Maiduguri, Col Muhammad Dole, said in a signed statement that a Boko Haram member and a culprit in the Tuesday bomb blast was arrested shortly after the incident, and was being interrogated by the military. There was no further details regarding the outcome of the interrogation.
