The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to continue with the process of recalling Dino Melaye.
The senator representing Kogi West federal constituency had approached the court alleging fraud in the process of recalling him.
Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello had in June told INEC that he had 188,588 signatures from Kogi West to recall Melaye.
INEC fixed August 19 to verify the signatures and confirm if Melaye’s constituents really demanded his recall from the Senate.
Melaye told the court that some of the signatures in Bello’s petition belonged to dead people.
With the Judiciary on vacation, the Justice Nnamdi Dimgba who presided over the case in place of John Tsoho, dismissed Melaye’s case and ordered INEC to carry on with the process.
The bad blood between both men dates back to their political allegiances in Kogi State. While Melaye is a loyalist of the late political stalwart of the State, Prince Abubakar Audu, while Bello is believed to be a godson of Bola Ahmed Tinubu from Lagos State.
The duo went public with their skirmish when Melaye protested the constitution of the local government caretaker committee setup by Bello.
After several heated exchanges, INEC got involved in the matter when Bello submitted his petition for Melaye’s recall.
