Top 20 countries with the least divorce rate worldwide — Egypt ranks 6th, South Africa 7th

The divorce rate is a statistic used to measure how often marriages end in divorce within a specific population and timeframe.

While couples in some countries are quick to divorce their partner, there are others with marriages that have a higher chance of lasting till old age.

Below are the top 20 countries with the least divorce rate:

1. India – 1%

Traditionally, arranged marriages were the norm in India, with families playing a major role in selecting spouses. However, there’s a shift towards love marriages, though often with parental approval.

Marriages are seen as a union between two families, not just individuals. Pre-wedding ceremonies often involve families getting to know each other.

The divorce rate in India is the lowest across the world, just 1 per cent.

2. Vietnam – 7%

Getting married in Vietnam involves a mix of legal procedures and, depending on the couple’s preferences, traditional customs.

The minimum marriage age for women in Vietnam is 18 and 20 for men.

Before the marriage proper, an official ceremony to announce the upcoming marriage is organised, often involving gifts and family gatherings.

The divorce rate in Vietnam is the second lowest worldwide, at just 7 per cent.

3. Tajikistan – 10%

Tajik weddings are traditionally multi-day celebrations filled with customs and rituals. These celebrations often involve large families and communities, reflecting the importance of family and social bonds.

The legal minimum age for marriage is 18 years old. In exceptional circumstances, a court may allow marriage at 17.

The divorce rate in Tajikistan is 10 per cent.

4. Iran – 14%

The traditional wedding in Iran varies depending on region and religion, but often involves separate ceremonies for the bride and groom’s families, followed by a main celebration.

One of the traditional ceremony is Baleh Boran which signifies the couple’s intention to marry and involves the exchange of gifts, often including a ring from the groom’s family to the bride. Then, Mahr, a mandatory bride price paid by the groom to the bride, which can be cash, property, or other valuables.

The divorce rate in Iran is 14 per cent.
