David Umahi, the Minister of Works and former Governor of Ebonyi State, has articulated his commitment to overseeing road constructions that boast a remarkable longevity of fifty years before necessitating any maintenance efforts.
Inducted as one of the 45 ministers in President Bola Tinubu’s administration on Monday, Umahi has wasted no time in outlining his approach to infrastructure development. Speaking on Thursday during an appearance on the Channels Television program “Sunrise Daily,” Umahi detailed his strategy to implement a “concrete technology” approach that ensures the creation of robust and enduring roadways.
Observing the challenges posed by roads that deteriorate prematurely, Umahi asserted, “The typical lifespan of a road is estimated to be between five to seven years. This is a situation that needs to be rectified. Currently, we are investing substantial funds into projects without achieving commensurate value.”
Umahi indicated that he has taken action to reassess projects under his purview. He commented, “I have personally directed my ministry to revisit all the ‘no objections’ submitted to the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP). It is imperative that we rethink our construction methods, taking into consideration the unique climatic conditions of our nation.”
He expounded on his proposed approach, stating, “The adoption of concrete technology in road construction is a paradigm shift that is bound to yield positive results. I am actively engaging with state governors to collaborate on this initiative. It is a transformative revolution that is poised to bring satisfaction to Nigerians.”
Umahi assured the nation that, under his leadership and in alignment with President Bola Tinubu’s directives, any road constructed using this innovative methodology will remain sturdy and functional for a staggering fifty years without necessitating significant maintenance.
“This foresight will result in substantial savings and the efficient allocation of resources during our tenure,” Umahi concluded confidently.
