Godswill Akpabio, the senate president, found himself in an awkward predicament when he unintentionally disclosed that money had been disbursed to senators for their recess.
This incident took place after the upper legislative chamber concluded the screening and confirmation of President Bola Tinubu’s ministerial nominees on a Monday. Following this, the senators decided to adjourn plenary until September 26.
Before the adjournment motion was put forth, Akpabio addressed his fellow colleagues, revealing that Magaji Tambuwal, the clerk of the national assembly, had dispatched a sum of money to the senators to “enjoy” their upcoming break. He stated, “To ensure that we all have a pleasant holiday, a modest amount has been transferred to our individual accounts by the clerk of the national assembly.”
Akpabio’s words were met with a swift realization from his peers that he was speaking on live television and in the presence of press cameras. Recognizing the significance of his remarks, Akpabio promptly retracted, saying, “I retract that statement.”
He swiftly altered his tone, remarking, “To enhance your holiday experience, the senate president has sent blessings to your inboxes to accompany you on a safe journey and a joyful return.”
This impromptu comment from Akpabio has raised further inquiries into the allocation of funds to lawmakers. The opacity surrounding the salaries and allowances of federal lawmakers continues to be a topic of scrutiny.
