Peter Godsday Orubebe is a Nigerian politician, political scientist, and ex-minister of the Niger Delta.

Orubebe attended Keneyinbo Primary School, Torugbene, from 1966-72. He had his secondary school education at MGbesa Grammar School, Ojobo, from 1973-77, and Methodist High School, Owo, Ondo, 1980.

He proceeded to Rivers State School of Basic Studies, Port Harcourt,1980-82.

He attended the University of Lagos, where he obtained a B.Sc. in political science in 1985. Later he obtained a master’s degree in international relations from Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, in 2005.

Political career

Orubebe main political career started as a supervisory councilor and later chairman of Burutu LGA.

He served as Supervisory Councilor of Education, Burutu Local Government Council, 1988-89; Chairman of the Council, 1991-93. He was later appointed Second Member in the Delta State Primary Education Board, Asaba,1995-97.

Orubebe was appointed Special Adviser, Urban, and Regional Planning by the former Governor of Delta State, Chief James Ibori.

He’s a co-founder, Yar’Adua/Goodluck National Support Organization, YGNSO. In July 2007, President Umaru Yar’Adua appointed him Minister of Special Duties.

Later he became Minister of State for Niger Delta Affairs when that ministry was created in 2009.

Controversy

On 31 March 2015, Orubebe, acting as a polling agent for the PDP, made attempts at disrupting the proceedings of the 2015 presidential election collation.

He alleged that the then-INEC Chairman, Attahiru Jega, had taken sides with the main opposition political party, APC.

He, however, subsequently apologized to Nigerians over his conduct by tendering an unreserved apology urging them not to follow in his footsteps and explaining that he regretted his action.

Meanwhile, the Code of Conduct Tribunal arraigned Godsdey Orubebe on a four-count charge bordering on breach of the Code of Conduct Bureau and Tribunal Act.

He was accused of making a false declaration in his asset declaration.

A statement by the spokesperson of the Tribunal, Ibraheem Al-hassan, said the charges were filed on October 8, 2015 by Peter Danladi of Code of Conduct Bureau, on behalf of the Attorney General of the Federation.

The statement reads; “That you Godsday Peter Orubebe, while being a Minister of Federal Republic of Nigeria in charge of Niger Delta Affairs, on or about June 29th 2011 did make a false declaration in your Asset Declaration Form by failing to declare Plot 2722 Kyamu District Abuja on assumption of office on 26th September 2007 and on leaving office (at the end of your tenure), on June 29, 2011 and you thereby committed an offence under section 15 of Code of Conduct Bureau and Tribunal Act Cap C15 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004 and as incorporated under paragraph 11(1) & (2) of part 1 fifth schedule to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended) and punishable under section 23(2) of the CCB & T Act and as incorporated under paragraph 18 of part 1, fifth schedule to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).

“That you Godsday Peter Orubebe while being a Minister of Federal Republic of Nigeria in charge of Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs, on or about June 29, 2011 did made a false declaration in your asset declaration form by failing to declare Plot 2059 Asokoro district, Abuja on assumption of office on September 26, 2007 and on June 29, 2011 and you thereby committed an offence under section 15 of the CCB & T Act, Cap C15, laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004 and as incorporated under paragraph 11(1) & (2) of part one fifth schedule to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), and punishable under section 23 (2) of the CCB & T Act and as incorporated in paragraph 18 part 1 fifth schedule to The Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).

“That you Godsday Peter Orubebe being a Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in charge of Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs on or about September 19, 2012 asked for and accepted the sum of fifty million naira from one Pastor (Dr) Jonathan Alota as bribe for the contract awarded in favour of his company, Chemtronics Nigeria Limited and you thereby committed an offence contrary to section 10 of the CCB & T Act CAP C15 laws of the federatiuon of Nigeria 2004 and as incorporated under paragraph 1 Federal Republic of Nigeria and punishable under section 23 (2) of CCB & T Act as incorporated under paragraph 18 of part 1, fifth schedule to the Constitution (as amended).

“That you Godsday Orubebe while being a Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in charge of Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs, on or about 2013 asked for and accepted the sum of twenty million naira from one Pastor (Dr) Jonathan Alota as additional bribe for the contract awarded in favour of his company Chemtronics Nigeria Limited for the construction of skill acquisition Centre at Edo State for the sum of one billion seven hundred and ninety nine million, nine hundred and fourteen thousand two hundred and fifty naira eighty eight kobo only (? 1,799,914,251.88K) and you thereby committed an offence contrary to section 10 of CCB & T Act as incorporated under paragraph 18 of part 1 fifth schedule to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).”
