10 most expensive cars in the world — One will buy 300 Rolls-Royces

Cars are not only designed for transportation; they are objects of pleasure and show of wealth. Meanwhile, real estate is considered a better investment than cars.

This does not stop the super-rich from acquiring their favourite you. Some cars are more expensive than acquiring the best properties in the high-end part of Nigeria.

Below are the top 10 most expensive cars in the world, and the price of some of them is more than enough to buy seventy-five (75) houses in Lekki, Lagos state, Nigeria. Average price of a house in Lekki is about $250,000.

The amount splashed on one is enough to buy at least 300 Rolls-Royces. Rolls-Royce costs on average, $450,000.

10. Rolls-Royce Sweptail – $13 million

The Rolls-Royce Sweptail is a custom-designed car developed based on a request by Rolls-Royce Hong Kong-based customer Sam Li, son of billionaire real estate mogul Samuel Tak Lee.

Only one version of this Rolls Royce Sweptail has been made. There is no other car of this model in the car market. Rolls-Royce hired a team of carmakers to build the car. Each part of this car is made with unique design and construction materials.

The design was inspired by yacht and it cost the buyer $13 million.

9. SP Automotive Chaos – $14.4 million

The SP Automotive Chaos a product by Greek automotive designer Spyros Panopoulos. The manufacturer prides itself on developing cars for the future.

Presently, the SP Automotive Chaos sells for abut $14,400,00.

8. Pagani Zonda HP Barchetta – $17 million

There are only three Zonda HP Barchettas ever built by Pagani. The only known owner Jonathan Hui, also owns 3 other Zondas: the Fantasma Evo, a Roadster F, and a S.

The car currently sells for about $17 million.

7. Bugatti La Voiture Noire – $18.7 million

The Bugatti La Voiture Noire is a limited edition supercar. Bugatti only produced one of this trim while the owner is yet unknown.

It was first announced in 2019 but became ready for sale in 2021. The incredible Chiron-based one-off inspired by the lost Type 57 SC Atlantic is rumoured to be owned by Cristiano Ronaldo.

There are other reports that it is owned by former Volkswagen boss Ferdinand Piech.

The $18.7 million fast car was built to celebrate Bugatti’s 110-year anniversary, as well as in an homage to the second of the four Type 57SCs—the original “la Voiture Noire,” which literally translates to “the black car”—driven by Jean Bugatti himself as well as some of his grand prix driver buddies. 

6. Rolls-Royce Boat Tail – $28 million

The Rolls-Royce Boat Tail was unveiled by Rolls Royce in 2022. The luxurious ride was revealed to the world for the first time at an event in Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, on the shores of Lake Como, Italy.

It features elements of a J-Class yacht as well as those of the original 1932 Boat Tail. This cool ride shows off with its 6.75-liter twin-turbo V12 engine capable of 563 horsepower.

Rolls-Royce Boat Tail is sold for a price between $25 million to $28 million. There are reports that it is sold for up to $30 million.

5. 1954 Mercedes-Benz W196 – $29.6 million

The Mercedes-Benz W196 was a Formula One racing car produced by Mercedes-Benz for the 1954 and 1955 F1 seasons. Successor to the W194, in the hands of Juan Manuel Fangio and Stirling Moss it won 9 of 12 races entered and captured the only two world championships in which it competed.

It was sold for $29.6 million at an auction in 2013.

4. 1937 Bugatti Type 57 SC Atlantic – $30 million

The Bugatti Type 57 and later variants (including the famous Atlantic and Atalante) was a grand tourer car built from 1934 through 1940.

It was an entirely new design created by Jean Bugatti, son of founder Ettore. A total of 710 Type 57s were produced.

Bugatti sold only three of the hand-crafted Atlantic cars to customers. In 1936, Bugatti built the first model for British banker Victor Rothschild, originally without a supercharger, in grey-blue.

This vehicle, with chassis number 57,374, is now known as the “Rothschild Atlantic”. The “Holzschuh Atlantic”, the third car built, with chassis number 57 473, was delivered to Jacques Holzschuh of France in October 1936.

The second owner of the car, a collector, died in an accident on a level crossing. The Bugatti was completely destroyed. Decades afterwards, it was the subject of a complex restoration, although the engine could not be saved.

Fashion designer Ralph Lauren is the owner of the last Atlantic produced, with chassis number 57 591, the “Pope Atlantic” was completed in May 1938 – its first owner was the Briton R.B. Pope.

The car was purchased by Mullin Automotive Museum in Oxnard, California, for $30 million at an auction in 2010.

3. 1957 Ferrari 335 Sport Scaglietti – $35.7 million

The Ferrari 335 S was a sports racing car produced by Italian manufacturer Ferrari in 1957.

The car was a direct response to the Maserati 450S which with its 4.5-litre engine was threatening to overpower the 3.8-litre 315 S and 3.5-litre 290 MM. Four cars were produced in total.

The car has an interesting pedigree as it first competed in the Sebring 12 Hours in March 1957 and finished sixth.

It also came in second at the Mille Miglia and become the first model in history to have an average lap speed of over 200 kilometres per hour at the Le Mans 24 Hours. Sir Stirling Moss is also affiliated with the car as he drove it to victory at the Cuba Grand Prix in 1958.

The car was eventually sold to Pennsylvania architect Robert N. Dusek in 1960.  He held onto the model for ten years before selling it to Pierre Bardinon who is a noted collector and has assembled a collection of approximately fifty Ferrari factory race cars.

It was sold for $35.7 million at an auction in Artcurial Motorcars Retromobile in 2016.

2. 1963 Ferrari 250 GTO – $70 million

The Ferrari 250 GTO is a GT car produced by Ferrari from 1962 to 1964 for homologation into the FIA’s Group 3 Grand Touring Car category. It was powered by Ferrari’s Tipo 168/62 Colombo V12 engine.

Only 39 examples of the 250 GTO were built by the legendary Italian marque between 1962 and 1964, and it’s extremely rare for an owner to part with one at any price.

However, David MacNeil, WeatherTech founder and CEO, acquired one with the chassis number 4153 GT in 2018 for a price of $70 milion.

1. 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupé – $147 million

Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupé from 1955 became the most expensive car ever to be sold when it was auctioned off in 2022 for a record price of 135 million EUR to a private collector.

This icon of automotive history is an absolute rarity – one of just two prototypes built at the time.

Named after its creator and chief engineer, Rudolf Uhlenhaut, it is considered to be one of the finest examples of automotive engineering and design by automotive experts and enthusiasts worldwide.

Proceeds of the auction was expected to be used as seed capital to fund “beVisioneers: The Mercedes-Benz Fellowship”.

The sports racing car that took part in the 1955 World Sportscar Championship before a catastrophic crash and fire at Le Mans later that year ended its domination prematurely.
