Blacklisted BVN – What you need to know

You may be aware that certain bank verification numbers(BVN) have been blacklisted by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

You won’t be able to access your bank account or conduct any financial transactions if your BVN is blacklisted. This can be a major hassle, especially if you frequently use your bank account to make purchases.

Simply put, it indicates that you are unable to access your money because your bank account has been frozen. Numerous things can cause this, but the most frequent one is not paying back a loan.

What is BVN?

Your BVN, or Bank Verification Number, is a one-of-a-kind identification number assigned to each bank account holder in Nigeria. It is used to assist banks in combating fraud and money laundering.

If your BVN is blacklisted, it means that your bank account has been linked to criminal activity. Fraud, money laundering, and terrorist financing are also other possibilities.

Why can a BVN be Blacklisted?

There are several reasons why your BVN may be blacklisted. Your BVN may be blacklisted if you have been reported for any fraudulent activity, if you have an outstanding debt with a financial institution, or if the Central Bank of Nigeria has placed you on a watch list.

Other reasons your BVN could be blacklisted include a history of money laundering, political exposure, or involvement in terrorist financing.

Consequences of Having a Blacklisted BVN

If your BVN is blacklisted, the following are some of the consequences:

  • You will be unable to access your bank account or any other financial institution that accepts BVN as identification.
  • You will be unable to obtain a loan or obtain a credit card.
  • You will be unable to leave Nigeria.
  • You may have trouble finding work because most employers now require a BVN check.
  • Your name will be added to a blacklist of individuals, making it difficult for you to conduct business in Nigeria.

How to know if your BVN is Blacklisted

Here are a few methods for determining whether your BVN has been blacklisted.

To begin, go to the website of the Central Bank of Nigeria and look up the list of blacklisted individuals.

Use the following steps to verify on the CBN website

  • On the website of the Central Bank of Nigeria, click on the “Check Your BVN Status” link.
  • After that, enter your BVN into the text box and press the “Check” button.
  • If your BVN is blacklisted, you’ll see a message that says “Your BVN is blacklisted. Please visit any bank for further information. ”

Second, you can contact your bank and request a BVN check. This will tell you whether or not your name is on the blacklist.

Third, you can go to a commercial bank and request a BVN check.

Don’t be alarmed if your name appears on the blacklist! There are still options for getting money out of Nigeria. Simply speak with your bank about your options.

What to do if your BVN is blacklisted?

Here are some of the things to do when you discover your BVN is blacklisted

  • Ask for assistance from the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS).
  • Contact your bank and ask them to assist you in having your BVN removed from the blacklist.
  • Request a white list status from the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC).
  • Obtain a clearance letter from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
  • Pay off all of your outstanding debts and bills.
  • Request a letter of removal from your bank (s).
  • Apply to the Presidential Committee on Verification and Clearing of Defaulters (PCVDC).

How Can I Prevent My BVN From Being Blacklisted?

Here are eight ways to avoid your BVN from being blacklisted

  • Check your account activity on a regular basis and report any suspicious activity to your bank.
  • Don’t give your BVN to anyone.
  • Do not use your BVN for online payments or shopping.
  • Maintain the privacy of your BVN information.
  • When making transactions, make sure to enter your BVN correctly.
  • Be cautious if you receive calls asking for your BVN information; they could be scammers.
  • Memorize your BVN so you don’t have to enter it every time you make a transaction.
  • Protect your phone with a strong password and anti-virus software to help prevent hackers from stealing your information.
