From the first universities of long ago, when they were just starting to become recognised as institutions of higher learning, leading modern universities were a far cry. While many higher education institutions today are money-making machines, the first universities struggled to survive without donors.

Some top universities have built separate campuses to accommodate students and offer a broader range of subjects. Students from nearby communities and abroad enrolled in undergraduate, graduate, and distance learning programs are among them.

Below is a list of the largest universities in the world by the number of student enrollment

5. Islamic Azad University – 1.5 Million Students

With over 1.5 million students enrolled, Azad University ranks as the fifth largest university in the world. In Iran, there is a system of universities. Azad University is a network of privately run universities, unlike California’s community colleges.

It has been around since 1982, and it operates in 31 locations with branches in Iran, the United Arab Emirates, Lebanon, Afghanistan, and the UK.

4. Anadolu University – 1.9 Million Students

The Turkish town of Eskisehir is home to Anadolu University. More than 2,000,000 students attend this school. Apart from its main campus in Eskisehir, located 230 miles from Ankara, Anadolu also provides open and distance learning.

Two more campuses of the university are located in Eylul. A world-class education is offered by its “Global Campus,” which is focused on technology. Three of the 14 faculties that are available to students there are available online.

3. National University, Bangladesh – 2 Million Students

Bangladesh’s Gazipur neighbourhood of Dhaka is home to the Bangladesh National University. 2,000,000 students attend this state-run university, dispersed among its affiliate colleges and those on its main campus.

Additionally, it offers doctoral, graduate, and undergraduate programs. Bangladesh National University offers classes in law, business administration, computer technology, biology, humanities, mathematics, physical sciences, social sciences, and humanities.

2. California Community College System – 2.1 Million Students

With 2.1 million students enrolled, the California Community College System is the second-largest university system in the world.

The system was first established in the early 1900s when the government decided that academic and vocational schools were necessary to close a skills gap in the California workforce. There are currently 114 colleges in the system.

1. Indira Gandhi National Open University – 4.9 Million Students

Delhi, India, is home to the Indira Gandhi National Open University. More than 4,000,000 people attend the university. Open and distance learning is the most widely used learning method.

The Indira Gandhi National Open curriculum encourages research, teaching, extension, and training. In Kerala, the university also opened its first regional office and planned to expand to serve more students.
