Adesewa Faith Odunsi was an SS3 student at The Ambassadors Schools, Ota, Ogun State, Nigeria when she won $1,000 after participating in the Global Open Mathematics Tournament.
The tournament is an international competition with participants from Europe, Africa, America, Asia and Australia in 2021.
She was 15 at the time, and the genius conquered other participants worldwide to put Nigeria on the world map again for a good reason.
Odunsi’s success did not start today. She rose to prominence in 2019 when she participated in the Cowbell mathematics competition, Cowbellpedia.
She didn’t just win the competition then; the mathematics whiz kid answered 19 mathematics questions in just 60 seconds. A record that remains unbroken to date in the history of the competition.
This was just the tip of the iceberg until she reannounced her genius attribute again in 2021 at the Global Open Mathematics Tournament. This time around, beating the runner-up with a mouthwatering 30 points, leaving her with a very uncontestable victory.
When asked if she ever wanted to participate in the competition, in an interview with Punch, Odunsi said she never wanted it at first but was inspired and motivated by her teacher.
She said “I didn’t want it (tournament) to affect my academic activities. So, after classes, I had another class with my teacher, who coached me. At a point, he had to take me out of the class as (the date for) the competition got closer. So, I had to split my reading time. I am a boarding pupil, so I had to study at night from 11 pm to 12 am.”
All thanks to the teacher and the parent who were behind the success of the mathematics genius from Ijebu Ode, Ogun State.
Aside from the Cowbellopedia and the Global Open Mathematics Tournament, Odunsi’s influence and genius ability has also been displayed in some other competitions.
She said “ I have been taking part in the national Olympiad since I was in JSS2. I have also taken part in Kangourou Sans Frontieres, South African mathematics Olympiad, American Mathematics Competition and Pan-African mathematics Olympiad. For the national Olympiad, I was made the Queen of Mathematics from JSS3 to SS2. For the South African mathematics Olympiad, I got medals. I got a silver medal in the Pan-African mathematics Olympiad in 2019. I was also made an ambassador of my school.”
Odunsi, however, said she’d love to be a Computer Engineer. This is to let the world know that Phillip Emeagwali, the Nigerian who built the fastest computer, is just the tip of the iceberg of what Nigeria will add to the world of technology.
