Honesty, they say, is a rare quality. Yet, some have it in excess. That is the case of Ogbanago Muhammed Ibrahim.
His honesty earned him a national award in the just concluded disbursement of national awards to deserving Nigerians by President Muhammadu Buhari.
Ogbanago, a graduate of the Kogi State College of Education, was a gateman at the Oba Akran, Ikeja branch of the United Bank of Africa, UBA, in 2016 when he returned a wad of $10,000, equivalent to N3.5M, to the owner.
The customer had come to withdraw money from the bank and forgot the money, discovered by Ogbanago, who took the money to the Branch Manager, Funmi Ojuile.
At the time of Ogbanago’s discovery of this money, his salary was just N30,000. In calculations, it will take him ten years of work to earn the equivalent of the money he found.
Surprisingly, Ogbanago, at that time, doesn’t have an apartment of his own. He was shuffling the places of his brothers who lived at Oshodi and Egbeda, respectively.
His honesty got him an invitation from the chairman of UBA, Tone Elumelu, who was amazed by his honesty.
It also earned him a commendation letter from his office, Technocrime Securities.
This gesture from Ogbanago has also opened doors of opportunities, and he has also received donations in cash and kind from top Nigerian dignitaries.
On the 11th of October 2022, Ogbanago was among the 447 persons conferred with the National Honours Award by President Muhammadu Buhari at the International Conference Centre, Abuja.
