1. PDP calls emergency meeting over governors, others’ gang-up [Punch Newspaper]
The leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party on Wednesday convened an emergency meeting following the withdrawal of Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State, his Oyo State counterpart, Seyi Makinde, ex-Information Minister, Prof. Jerry Gana, and other prominent party chieftains from the party’s presidential campaign council.
The Wike camp announced their plan not to participate in the campaign council which was scheduled for inauguration next Wednesday after a meeting at Wike’s private residence in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Wednesday morning.
They hinged their decision on the failure of the party’s Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu to resign from office, insisting that the position must come to the South for balance, justice, and equity.
Sequel to the development, the main opposition party went into a marathon meeting to deliberate on the impact of the withdrawal on the party’s plans.
2. Court orders ASUU to Call Off Strike [NewsWireNGR]
The National Industrial Court has ordered the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), to call off the ongoing Strike.
Delivering a ruling on the interlocutory injunction filed by the Federal government , Justice Polycarp Hamman restrained ASUU from continuing with the industrial action pending the determination of the suit. Read more.

The Senator representing Kano Central, Ibrahim Shekarau, has defected to the Peoples Democratic Party.

4. Nigeria’s public debt defies gravity as it rises to an all-time high of N42.3 Trillion [NewsWireNGR]
The Debt Management Office (DMO) said Nigeria’s total public debt stock, which was N41.60 trillion ($100.07 billion) in March, rose to N42.84 trillion (103.31 billion dollars) by June.
According to a statement from DMO’s website on Tuesday, the total debt represents the Federal Government of Nigeria’s domestic and external debt stocks (FGN), the 36 State Governments and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
It said that while the foreign component of the debt remained at the same level of N16.61 trillion (39.96 billion dollars), the local component increased to N26.23 trillion (63.24 billion dollars). Read more.
5. Senate confirms the nomination of Justice Olukayode Ariwoola as the new Chief Justice of Nigeria [NewsWireNGR]
The Senate has confirmed the nomination of Justice Olukayode Ariwoola as the new Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN).
The development was sequel to his screening by the Committee of the Whole at the Senate chambers on Wednesday.
During the screening, Justice Ariwoola responded to questions posed to him by Senators.
The motion for the screening was moved by the Senate Leader, Senator Ibrahim Gobir, at the plenary at 11:35 am. Read more.
