Senator Kashim Shettima has been announced as the running mate of the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Tinubu.

- In 2014, The kidnap of over 250 schoolgirls in Chibok may not have occurred if the Borno State Government had heeded the advice of an examination body, fresh facts have emerged. Aware of the poor security situation in Borno and worried about the safety of students, the West African Examination Council, WAEC, declined to conduct its Senior School Certificate Examination in unsafe parts of Borno, including Chibok. But that was until the state governor, Kashim Shettima, assured of adequate security measures, an official has said.
- In 2016, Governor Kashim Shettima of Borno State had said he did not call former President Goodluck Jonathan to brief him after Boko Haram abducted over 200 school girls from Chibok, because he knew that security agencies must have briefed the president of the development the day it happened. Mr. Shettima said as president, Mr. Jonathan had wide resources to keep him abreast of serious national security issues on a daily basis.
- In 2015, Newly sworn-in Governor of Borno State, Kashim Shettima, on Friday said his new administration would, among other policies, pursue amnesty for members of Boko Haram who are ready to de-radicalise. Shettima, who took an oath of office to serve for yet another four years alongside his deputy, Zannah Mustapha, said he would lobby the new federal government of President Muhammadu Buhari to consider granting amnesty to the militants.
- Former Governor of Borno State, Senator Kashim Shettima, thursday asked critics of President Muhammadu Buhari to stop demonising him over the Boko Haram insurgency in the North-east region. Shettima, who represents Borno South senatorial district, described as unnecessary and uncalled for the usual accusation by critics of President Buhari that he has not been able to curb terrorists attack in the country. According to him, President Buhari has done enough security wise for the Northeast especially with most of the service chiefs hailing from the geo-political zone.
