Indian classical composer and Santoor player from Jammu, Northern India ‘Shivkumar Sharma’ as he is popularly known, died on Tuesday, May 10, 2022 in Mumbai India, at the age of 84.
The composer succumbed to a cardiac arrest after battling kidney related sicknesses for about half a year.
Pandit Sharma who is known for his Bollywood film soundtracks and playing the classical instrument Santoor, rose to fame in 1967 for his album ‘Call of the Valley’.
He worked in collaboration with Flautist ‘Hariprasad Chaurisia’ often and they composed numerous soundtracks for Indian filmmaker Yash Chopra.
Some of the Bollywood titled include Shah Rukh Khan’s breakthrough film of 1993 ‘Darr’, Silsila – 1981 which starred a number of Bollywood A-list actors, ‘Faasle’ which was released in 1985, Chandni – 1989,Vijay – 1988, Parampara – 1993, Sahibaan – 1993, and Lamhe – 1991.
Shivkumar and his flautist associate, both known as the duo ‘Shiv-Hari’ received multiple nominations at the Filmfare award in the music category for their work on ‘Chandni’, ‘Darr’, ‘Lahme’, and ‘Silsila’.
In 1986, Pandit Sharma received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award. He also received the Padma Shri award in 1991, and in 2001 the Padma Vibhushan, all Indian honorary awards.
