1. Electoral violence: 1,149 Nigerians killed, INEC suffers 42 attacks, decries rising insecurity [Punch Newspaper]

The Independent National Electoral Commission has lost no fewer than 9,836 smart card readers in over 42 attacks on its offices and staff in three years.

Also, more than 1,149  persons, including INEC employees and security officers were killed in the three elections held in 2011, 2015 and 2019.  Ballot papers, cubicles and other materials were similarly destroyed.

2. Amid Worsening Insecurity, Defence Minister Seeks God’s Intervention to Defeat Terrorists [ThisDay Newspaper]

Frustrated by worsening insecurity, amid wide criticism of government’s inability to protect the citizenry, Minister of Defence, Maj-Gen Bashir Magashi (rtd), yesterday, called for God’s intervention in the fight against insurgents and other criminal elements in the country.

The resort to divine intervention came on the heels of reported military air strikes in the North-east, which were said to have routed scores of terrorists. The terrorists had, allegedly, fired mortar bombs at civilian targets in Gujba Local Government Area of Yobe State, recently. That was as the security situation in the country continued to deteriorate, with armed extremists striking at will, kidnapping many, and killing scores.

3. N4trn bill: How petrol subsidy grew by 349.42% in 3 years [Vanguard Newspaper]

Petrol subsidy payments grew by 349.42 per cent from N350 billion in 2019 to N1.573 trillion in 2021, propelled by the rising price of crude oil in the international market and the falling value of the Naira.

The cost of subsidizing the product in 2020 was N450 billion. In 2022 alone, the total cost of subsidy in January and February was N396.72 billion, the latest data from the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, has shown.

Governor Akeredolu returns to Nigeria 24 hours after death rumour. The Ondo State Government had dismissed as untrue the purported death of Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, attributing the rumour to some political adversaries of the present administration in the state.

The Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, has absolved his principal, President Muhammadu Buhari from criticism that the President’s ruling style had contributed to the division in the country.

Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, has joined the race for the presidential seat.

8. Police begin investigation to ascertain identities of  Chrisland school students in alleged rape video [NewsWireNGR]

The Lagos State Police Command said it would ensure that justice is served amid controversy over the issue, involving some pupils of the school taken on a trip to Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE) – it said the matter was being investigated.

The Lagos State government has shut down all branches of Chrisland Schools in various parts of the state over an alleged sexual abuse of one of its pupils. Read more.

9. Suspend 2023 elections, install interim government– Afe Babalola says [NewsWireNGR]

Legal icon and elder statesman, Chief Afe Babalola, says an interim government should replace the current administration at the expiration of President Muhammadu Buhari tenure in 2023.

Babalola told a news conference in Ado-Ekiti on Monday that the interim government should be in office for six months to chart a new course for Nigeria.

He stressed that the 2023 elections should be suspended until Nigeria has “a new-look peoples’ Constitution which should provide for part-time legislators and non-executive president’’. Read more.
