American singer and songwriter, India Arie Simpson, stage name India.Arie has shared her thoughts on the music industry.
The singer took to her Instagram story on Wednesday to explain how her experiences in the music industry shaped her life.
She explained the music industry is really there to exploit and has no regard for them
She wrote “seeing old pictures reminds me of how TRASH the music industry is. SHEER and utter trash. The music industry is racist. sexist. deceitful. It steals from artists. Trash”
The singer also explains she loves who she is now and although she may never heal from the damage, her experience shaped her life in a lot of ways.
She also shed light on how the industry mad her perceive herself.
“The industry made me feel like I WASN’T beautiful. I can tell you some STORIES HONEY! But in truth ~ I was just ahead of my time.”
“I used ti really try to do everything right. Now? I do whats honesty. I’m grateful to have been heard!but I also paid a HIGH cost” she wrote.
After sharing her experience, she expresses she is proud to have been a pioneer of sorts.
The slide reads “and for ANYONE who I paved the way for~ YOU are why it was lol worry that it.”
“I HAVE GROWN FREE! And MORE Beautiful. And exponentially SOULFUL ! So. the journey was all worth it. AND MY MOST POWERFUL DAYS ARE STILL TO COME!”
She ended the series of slides showing gratitude to everyone who negatively impacted her experience.
She wrote “And to everyone who in the industry who used, SUED, Played, Stole from, betrayed ME. THANK YOU.”
India Arie is a 46-year-old American singer and songwriter. In her teenage years, she was signed to Mowtown Records (an American record label owned by the Universal Music Group) opened shows for veteran artistes like Stevie Wonder and Al Green
She released her debut album “Acoustic Soul” in 2001 which debuted at number ten on the U.S. Billboard 200 and number three on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums.
Acoustic Soul also got certified double platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). The album sold 2,180,000 copies in the U.S. and 3,000,000 copies worldwide.
It was also certified Gold by the British Phonographic Industry, and platinum by Music Canada.
