Netflix Inc. shares experienced a drop of over 2% on Wednesday after billionaire Elon Musk publicly urged subscribers to cancel their accounts. Musk’s call, amplified across his social media platforms, sparked a debate over the streaming giant’s content and diversity policies, quickly translating cultural controversy into market reaction.
Musk, who owns Tesla, SpaceX, and X (formerly Twitter), posted multiple messages demanding users to “Cancel Netflix” and later added, “Cancel Netflix for the health of your kids.” The comments came shortly after he announced he had ended his own subscription.
The controversy that led to Musk’s intervention stemmed from two separate but linked issues:
- Creator’s Remarks: The immediate catalyst involved the creator of the canceled animated series Dead End: Paranormal Park, Hamish Steele. The show featured LGBTQ characters, and clips continue to circulate online. Steele faced backlash after an unrelated social media post where he referred to conservative activist Charlie Kirk(who died in September) as a “nazi.” Musk agreed with a user who announced they were canceling their account in response to the perceived mockery of Kirk’s death.
- Diversity Criticism: In a separate exchange, Musk publicly supported a post criticizing Netflix’s official inclusion and diversity report, which highlighted increases in directors and lead characters from underrepresented racial groups. Responding to a post claiming Netflix was “discriminating against White people,” Musk replied, “Cancel Netflix.”
Investor Reaction and Market Impact
Investor reaction to the viral campaign was immediate and evident. Netflix stock closed 2.34% lower on the day of Musk’s comments. The drop highlights how cultural and political debates, when amplified by high-profile figures with massive online followings, can rapidly influence financial markets.
For Netflix, this development occurs during a period of pressure to sustain growth in a highly competitive market. While the company has weathered boycotts over programming choices in the past with limited long-term impact, short-term fluctuations in investor sentiment remain a notable risk.
As of the time of the report, Netflix has not issued a formal statement in response to Musk’s comments. Hamish Steele previously denied celebrating Kirk’s death and disputed claims about active promotion of his series.
