An act of brazen criminality on the waterways saw at least 12 passengers abducted on Thursday afternoon after gunmen attacked a boat en route from Calabar (Cross River State) to Oron (Akwa Ibom State).
Among the high-profile victims confirmed to have been on board were DSP Timfon John, the Public Relations Officer for the Akwa Ibom State Police Command, and prominent politician Eyo Ekpo Esq., a former Cross River governorship candidate.
A survivor reported the attackers boarded the vessel and left once their own boat was “full” with hostages, including a relative of the survivor.
The boat’s captain, from a registered ferry service, damaged an engine while attempting an escape before returning to Calabar.
Upon arrival, police at the Inland Waterways Jetty documented statements from the remaining passengers before releasing them.
Officials from both the Cross River and Akwa Ibom Police Commands have yet to issue a formal statement but we will keep our readers updated as we get further details.
