Blasphemy: Reactions as Atiku deletes Tweet condemning killing of Christian student

It was a gory view for many Nigerians who saw how a Christian student was flogged and burnt alive by a group of Muslim students at Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto over alleged blasphemy against Prophet Muhammad on Thursday.

The student identified as Deborah Samuel, according to the state police command is a level-two student and was accused of making a social media post that blasphemed the holy prophet Muhammad (SAW).

Sensing danger to her life, she was evacuated to the security post but the mob pursued her there and overpowered the security personnel.

They were seen in the viral video throwing stones and at the same time flogging her. The Muslim male students later surrounded her with tyres and lit her up.

Reacting to the sad incident, Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Mathew Kukah, condemned the killing.

“We condemn this incident in the strongest terms and call on the authorities to investigate this tragedy and ensure that all the culprits are brought to book. The only obligation that is owed her immediate family, her fellow students and the school authorities is the assurance that those who are guilty of this inhuman act, no matter their motivation, are punished according to our extant laws of the land. This has nothing to do with religion. Christians have lived peacefully with their Muslim neighbours here in Sokoto over the years. This matter must be treated as a criminal act and the law must take its cause.”

In a tweet now deleted, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar also condemned the act saying such action is “gruesome” and “all those behind her death must be brought to justice”.

The presidential aspirant deleted the tweet after a series of threats by fanatics that he won’t be voted for come 2023.

Slamming Atiku for deleting the post, online comedian, Mr Macaroni said; “Atiku deleting the tweet condemning the gruesome murder of Deborah shows what we have been preaching this whole election season. Politicians don’t care for the people. They only play to the gallery when seeking for our votes. The people must see beyond these gimmicks…”

In the same line, Ogbeni Dipo said; “Such a good tweet from Atiku Abubakar condemning the brutal murder of Deborah Yakubu. It’s really embarrassing it was deleted, especially after his silence about the Pantami saga.”
