Just In: Buhari Swears In Justice Walter Onnogen As Acting CJN, Withholds Nomination

President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday, swears in Justice Walter Nkanu Onnogen as the acting Chief Justice of Nigeria.

Walter Samuel Nkanu Onnoghen, who was born on December 22, 1950 is a Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria since 2005. He graduated from the University of Ghana at Legon, Ghana in 1977 and from the Nigerian Law School in Lagos in 1978. Before joining the Supreme Court, he was a judge in Cross River State and a justice of the Court of Appeal.

Onnoghen hails from Okurike Town, Biase local government area of Cross Rivers State.

Onnoghen’s name should have been forwarded to the Senate for confirmation as he is the next in line to Justice Mahmoud in terms of seniority according to practise. The delay by President Buhari in forwarding Onnoghen’s name to Senate for confirmation has been shrouded in the politics of ethnicity.

Onnoghen is from Nigeria’s South-South minority.
