Senate threatens to suspend plenary over inability of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to conduct Rivers re-run elections, the commission had suspended the elections indefinitely.

INEC had said it would conclude the suspended elections in Rivers, Imo, Kogi and Kano states not later than July, 31, 2016 in a statement issued by Oluwole Osaze-Uzzi, the INEC Director, Voter Education and Publicity.

NewsWireNGR recalls that the Head of Operations at the national office of the electoral body, Amina Zakari said that the elections in Rivers State were not inconclusive but suspended, adding that INEC will be free for elections after the Edo State governorship election slated for September. “We are looking at mid October for the elections so that we can do the budget properly. The Edo State election is coming up in September. We need to recruit and train ad-hoc staff. We need to do this election conclusively,” she said.

The resolution of the senate is coming days after the House of Representatives also urged the Independent National Electoral Commission to hold postponed rerun elections in Rivers State.

Minority Leader, Leo Ogor, had on Tuesday, November 1, 2016 moved the motion to urge INEC to conduct the rerun elections as the state has no representation at the National Assembly.

The lawmakers observed that Rivers State and other affected states have no representation at the National Assembly, thus, denying the constituents of adequate representation in governance.

Arguing further, Ogor insisted that INEC’s claims of insecurity as the reason for stalling the rerun is not acceptable as elections held in the dreaded North-East in 2015 despite Boko Haram activities.
