Anuoluwapo Adebayo: Our Beautician, @anu_chayil Talks About What Has Genes Got To Do With Your Skin

During my years in Boarding school, any time my Mother visited me, a lot of my friends would tease me about how I was adopted or why I was claiming someone who didn’t birth me…….simply because my Mother was stunning and is still very beautiful. She has healthy milk chocolate skin with no facial blemishes, a bright smile and all my life I have never known her to be overweight; I am extremely proud of her and those years I got teased, I wondered why I didn’t take all her features and just be like her.

By the time I graduated and spent more time with her I knew the truth; though she came from a lineage of beautiful African women, my mother was a Classic babe!

I always knew but experiencing it in my semi- adult life just made it real- she slept early, drank water first thing in the morning and often during the day, never smoked, took walks when she got the chance, ate right (she infected me with a love for Sea food), she was diligent and faithful with her beauty routine and good products (E45, Oil of Olay and Dove were familiar brands), had her hair done weekly or max 2 weeks apart and she just hardly stressed herself out. Almost two decades later and even with signs of her advancement in age, she still has these habits while I am here struggling to just go one week without giving up my healthy lifestyle plan, help me Lord!!!

So I often wonder, some people eat anyhow, never exercise and wash from head to toe in multi-purpose soap yet they seem to appear flawless because they have great genes but can we really get away with that forever? I think all our choices will have consequences. We all know at least one person who fits this description but it’s not necessary to be envious because good genes or not, good habits will win.

People do not tease me about my mother anymore, in fact they tell us we look alike now (beaming) but it is not only because I have her blood flowing in me or I blossomed into this beautiful swan; I know I have done my own assignment and tried to remain consistent with my beauty and grooming routines.
