In Ondo State Nigeria, Monarch Kidnapped In His Palace

Oba Abiodun Oyewunmi, the Traditional ruler of Iyasan community in Irele council area of Ondo State, has been kidnaped by 10 suspected armed men who invaded his palace and took him away.

The kidnappers, who came to the town through the Owena River, were alleged to have been armed sufficiently for the operation which went unhindered for over 30 minutes.

Speaking with newsmen, Sanmi Elumaro, Chairman of the council, confirmed the kidnap of the foremost monarch, the Laragunsin of Iyasan?, on Tuesday, at about 10pm to an unknown destination.

The council boss confirmed that the abductors were fully armed and could not be challenged by residents and palace guards who watched helplessly as the Oba was whisked away.

He denied reports that the incident had to do with the chieftaincy tussle coupled with the legal tussle that trailed the installation of the Oba saying “the Oba was properly installed by the kingmakers.”

Elumaro disclosed that the abductors have not contacted the family of the Oba adding that the matter had been taken reported to both the Navy and Policemen who have swung into action to ensure the release of the monarch.

Confirming the incident, Femi Joseph, Public Relations Officer, Ondo State Police Command, disclosed that investigation has begun to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident adding that the Oba would soon be rescued as security operatives in the state were on the trail of the kidnappers.
