Super Eagles and Watford FC of England striker, Odion Ighalo scored a controversial 46th minute opener as Watford edged Newcastle, 2 – 1 at Vicarage Road.
The Nigerian, who has been subject to several rumoured bids from West Ham, Chelsea and other clubs outside England; had endured a four-game barren run, which coincided with his club’s difficult spell after a great first half of the league. He also saw one of his hitherto 14 goals chalked off, after his deflected effort against Chelsea, on December 26th was credited as a Gary Vanilla own goal.
Ighalo’s 14th league goal owed much to a pin-point through ball from strike partner and ream.captain Troy Deeney. Despite calls for offside, the striker kept his cool to slot the ball calmly below the arms of Newcastle goalie, Rob Elliot. Craig Cathcart doubled the Hornets lead before Jamaal Lascelles grabbed the only goal for Newcastle, as Steve McLaren’s side remain rooted in the bottom three on the league log.
