Kano State Governor Umar Ganduje has advised President Muhammadu Buhari to negotiate with only genuine leaders of the Boko Haram terrorist group.

The governor spoke to State House journalists yesterday shortly after meeting with the president.

Buhari had disclosed in Paris on Tuesday while meeting with Nigerians living in France that his government was negotiating with some leaders of the sect on the release of the over 200 Chibok schoolgirls abducted on April 14, 2014.

Ganduje stated that experience had shown that the Boko Haram sect has factions, saying if unlucky, the country might be dealing with the wrong faction.

The governor also urged the federal government to engage security agencies in determining the genuineness of the sect’s leaders it was negotiating with. He said communities should also be engaged as they could assist the security agencies with vital information that could enhance the counter-terrorism operations.

“Communities should be interested in the whole security situation because a lot of information can be received from the local people which will assist the security agencies. People should be alert about security situation,” Ganduje said.

The governor acknowledged that Buhari’s efforts towards containing the insurgency had brought about peace.
