Senate Begins The Screening Of Service Chiefs Behind Closed Doors

The Senate on Tuesday commenced the screening of the newly appointed service chiefs behind closed doors.

Buhari on July 13, announced the appointment of Major General Abayomi Olonishakin, Chief of Defence Staff; Major General Tukur Buratai, Chief of Army Staff; Rear Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, Chief of Naval Staff; Air Vice-Marshal Sadique Abubakar, Chief of Air Staff; and Air Vice-Marchal Monday Morgan as Chief of Defence Intelligence.

The president also appointed retired Major General Babagana Monguno as National Security Adviser.

The screening earlier slated for last week Thursday, was postponed to today, Tuesday, due to the pulling out parade programme organised by the military in honour of the former Chief of Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshal, Alex Badeh, which took place in Abuja last Thursday.

The Senate President, Bukola Saraki, had announced on Wednesday last week that the newly appointed service chiefs would be screened during plenary on Thursday last week by 11:00am.

Saraki had read President Muhammadu Buhari’s letter seeking the confirmation of the upper chamber for the appointment of new service chiefs, during plenary.

He had said that the letter to confirm the appointments was in accordance with the provisions of Section18 (1) of the Armed Forces Act, 2004.
