The Lagos State House of Assembly has passed a law barring private taxi cab operators in the state.

The lawmakers also set in motion, new road traffic regulations on taxi operations in the state.

In his presentation before the assembly members, Majority Leader of the House, Ajibayo Adeyeye said that the approval of the regulation was long overdue and urged the house members to give the bill a speedy passage, which they did.

The new regulations mandate every taxi cab operator in the state to obtain a license from the state Ministry of Transportation to operate.

The ministry would also be empowered to arrest any operator, who does not have a license to operate.

The lawmakers also stated that sub-standard cabs would lot be allowed to operate in the state as this would negate the vision of a megacity which the state was trying to achieve.

Speaker of the House, Adeyemi Ikuforiji stated that “in developed countries, you see the kind of taxi cabs that operate, unlike what is obtainable in Lagos State presently. We need to regulate the operations of taxi cabs so that the operators would have access to loans.”
