The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) in Osun says it has destroyed counterfeit and fake drugs worth N10 million in the state in 2014. The NAFDAC State Coordinator, Mr Kayode Fagboyo, made the disclosure in an interview with NAN in Osogbo on Thursday.

Fagboyo said the fake drugs were destroyed in collaboration with the state Ministry of Health. He noted that since the agency understood the health implication of consuming counterfeit drug, it would not relent in its effort to rid the state and entire country of fake drugs.

He said: “NAFDAC wants to ensure that drugs that will be made available to Nigerians won’t be injurious to their health. We are trying to implement our mandate.”

According to him, the agency wants to ensure that any unregistered and counterfeit drugs are not made available to the people in the state and Nigeria at large. Fagboyo said the agency would continue to appeal to fake drug producers to desist from the act, adding that anybody caught would be dealt with in accordance with the law.

“We are still appealing in the spirit of democracy that those who engage in the production and importation of fake drugs should change from their wrong path. “But whosoever that is not willing to change, the agency is willing to use the big stick of the law to make sure that everybody complies with NAFDAC provision,” he said. Fagboyo said the agency would continue to sanitise the nation’s health system.
