Manchester City Dents Southampton’s Hopes With Emphatic Victory

English premier league defending champions, Manchester City went away on Sunday evening to defeat this season’s EPL surprise package, Southampton 3-0.

The first half was keenly contested by both sides and they went in at half time with a goalless draw.

Hostilities resumed in the second half and Manchester City was the first to sting with a 51st minute strike from Yaya Toure after Sergio Aguero set him up with a pass. Manchester City continued to impress but were reduced to ten men in the 74th minute when Eliaqium Mangala was dismissed for a second bookable offence.

As Southampton began to push for an equalizer, Manchester City stung again with a Frank Lampard goal in the 80th minute after the Chelsea legend received a square ball from winger, James Milner.

Despite the one man advantage, the home team could not break down the City defence and their misery was compounded in the 88th minute when Gael Clichy grabbed his first goal ever for Manchester City after arriving late in the box to blast home a pass a perfect pass from Sergio Aguero.

Before the game, Southampton was the second placed team on the premier league table, seven points behind league leaders Chelsea. Manchester City’s triumph now takes them to second position on the league table and  sees Southampton drop to third position.
