Tech: “Selfie,” “Baby Bump” And “Hashtag” Added To Merriam-Webster Dictionary

Merriam-Webster announced on Monday that 150 new words and definitions have been added to the collegiate dictionary, including “selfie,” “hashtag,” “baby bump” and more. In a press release, Merriam-Webster said the new words “reflect the growing influence technology is having on human endeavor, especially social networking.”

A number of celebs have used this language on social media and made them famous, so it’s only fair that they get proper credit, it’s still nice to know that we are actually speaking proper English when using them now.

So from here on out, when someone asks you what a “selfie” or “hashtag” (or any of these fun words below) means, you can direct them to Merriam-Webster or just give them the following definitions:

selfie: an image of oneself taken by oneself using a digital camera especially for posting on social networks

hashtag: a word or phrase preceded by the symbol # that classifies or categorizes the accompanying text [such as a tweet]

tweep: a person who uses the Twitter online message service to send and receive tweets

catfish: a person who sets up a false personal profile on a social networking site for fraudulent or deceptive purposes
