The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons and Other Related Matters says it convicted eight persons for human trafficking offences in its Uyo zone in 2013.

The Zonal Commander in charge of Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross River and Rivers states, Mr Ikechi Nwachukwu, disclosed this while briefing newsmen in Uyo on Wednesday.

He said the agency would ensure that human trafficking was brought to the barest minimum in the zone, adding that the agency would embark on a sensitisation campaign in the four states as part of strategy to curb the menace.

“We have been able to secure eight convictions last year. It is a ground-breaking record because before now we were not able to achieve such feat.

“We have the mandate to win the fight against human trafficking in the zone as part of our focus this year. Many other cases are still ongoing which we are prosecuting,” he said.

Nwachukwu lamented that trafficking in humans was successful because people did not know the tricks and tactics of traffickers.

He pledged the commitment of the agency to expose the tactics and strategies of traffickers.

“Sensitisation and education of the people will be our focus in collaboration with other security agencies to curb this menace in the country,” he said.
