The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has donated fishing equipment to 2,000 fishermen affected by the 2012 floods in Taraba.

Mr Samuel Adaji, a Director in the ministry, gave the items at a ceremony on Wednesday in Jalingo.

Adaji said the move was to alleviate the sufferings of fishermen who lost all their fishing tools to the unfortunate disaster.

He expressed hope that the materials would increase the production of fish in the state.

“It is important to note that fish is the best animal protein that we have around us.

“It is free of cholesterol that causes heart disease in humans, ” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that items donated included 500 bundles of fishing nets, 500 pieces of 4mm marine ropes, 50,000 pieces of floats 5H15, and 1,000 sheets of sinkers.

Alhaji Isa Musa, the state Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, thanked the government for responding to the plight of the fishermen.

He urged the beneficiaries to make maximum use of the items to better their lot and make fish available to the people of the state and the country at large.
